Local Artist John Marefka introduces “The Owl From Powell”,! A comic strip featuring a droll owl and his animal friends" who offer their unique perspective on suburban living!
John Marefka, advertising art director by day, and fine artist by night, has launched the comic strip, “The Owl from Powell” which features a droll owl and his friends who offer their perspective on suburban living and the various shenanigans they witness. And because there is no end to human shenanigans, The Owl from Powell and his animal friends keep mighty busy, perplexed and amused.
The main characters are:
The Owl: An observer of human and animal nature Gus the Groundhog: A tough, somewhat shady character who achieves his wants and goals through any means necessary Dink the Deer: Cis sweet disposition tends to get cis in trouble Shel the Squirrel: A spiritual being who tries, but fails to lift those around her to another dimension |
"Other characters come and go depending on the ever-evolving story lines. The characters are based on animals that are native to the area and also creatures who have escaped from the local zoo. Like Jerry the Giraffe, who tries his best to fit into his new surroundings.
"I really care about animals and worry we don’t think of them as much as we should.” says Marefka. “We humans go about our days so often interfering in their lives that I thought I’d figure out a way to let people know what they might be thinking of us.” |
Marefka continued, “I’d like The Owl from Powell to grow into a profitable enterprise, offering prints and other branded merchandise where a portion of the profits would be used for animal rescue and environmental causes. I would also like to educate children about animals and how their actions affect the environment. I envision The Owl from Powell as a character who would visit area schools, entertaining the children while also educating them.”
